Fan and light cannot be controlled by wall switch

We saw the Hunter "Forest Hill" fan at a store and purchased it for our bedroom. We thought it would be nice to be able to turn the light off with the remote once settled in bed. What we didn't realize, and what isn't disclosed anywhere on the box or in the owner's guide and instruction manual, is that the wall switch will not turn on either the light or the fan. The wall switch strictly provides power to the unit. (Isn't that what your breaker box is for?) The fan and light can only be turned on with the remote. So when you flip on the light switch at night, nothing happens. You have to shuffle (or stumble) across the room and try to find the remote in the dark so you can turn the light on. When the light is on and you leave the room and flip the wall switch off, don't expect to re-enter the room and turn the light back on with the wall switch. It won't happen.I called Hunter Fan's customer service to say our remote unit is wired backwards and the wall switch defaults to "off". The representative said that all of their remote-controlled fans were changed to work this way a few years ago. She said the only "fix" would be to uninstall the remote in the ceiling and control the fan and light with the pull chains. OK, so instead of stumbling across the room to find the remote, we would instead have to climb on top of the bed then stand up to reach the pull chains. Yeah, that's an improvement.... I told the representative that this design is a major safety issue since the wall switch won't work and you have to cross a dark room to find the remote. She made it clear that there was no solution to the problem.Why doesn't Hunter wire these so that the wall switch defaults to "on"? Your wall switch should turn the light on, you could turn it off (and back on, if you want) remotely. Flipping the wall switch off should reset the controller so that if the light was last turned off with the remote, flipping the wall switch on again would turn your light back on.Oh, and like some of the other reviews have stated: If the wall switch/breaker is left in the "on" position, the light will sometimes turn on all by itself.We love the ceiling fan itself, but really regret that the remote Hunter 27157 Basic Remote Control came with it. Hunter should clearly mark all packaging on fans that include this remote (and the remote kit sold by itself), the owner's guide/instruction manuals and their advertising that this remote will disable your wall switch and should not be used with a wall switch that controls your ceiling light fixture.

Great for the price

The quality and look of this fan is great, yes, it was a little difficult to install, but we also, are by far, not electricians. Considering that I couldn't find this exact fan or any of the same quality under $300.00, I think it was well worth the extra effort to get it installed.

SO PRETTY!!!!

I purchased 2 of these fans to go in my living room on the vaulted ceiling and they look so pretty! The lamp is a very beautiful tan color when lit up and I couldn't be happier with their performance. Absolutely great buy! I couldn't find a decent selection in this size at Home Depot or Lowes and I'm just so glad I found these fans so I didn't have to get something I didnt like just because of the size.Thanks, Amazon!!
